James H. Cafferty was an American 19th Century painter who was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1819. He began his professional life as a portrait-painter, in which branch he attained an early reputation. He was esteemed for his portraits, especially those of fellow artists such as Jasper Francis Cropsey and John Frederick Kensett. He also painted landscapes and genre scenes. Cafferty's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from 183 USD to 15,000 USD, depending on the size and medium. He died in 1869.
