Biography:

Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht was a Dutch painter and illustrator, famed for his military art. He was born in Amsterdam on September 18th 1858 and died in The Hague on December 11th 1933. His father, John Cornelis Hoynck van Papendrecht, was an accomplished student of drawing and painting, a skill that manifested itself in him from an early age. He completed his studies at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In 1885, van Papendrecht's drawings appeared in the popular illustrated magazine 'Elsevier'. He was a prolific artist and his total oeuvre is impressive in quantity. He is known for his own course and was not recognized as an artist during his lifetime. He is known for his detailed and realistic depictions of military scenes, including the Battle of Berezina and the Battle of the Boyne.
