Biography:
Jan Jacob Teyler van Hall was a Dutch artist born in Amsterdam in 1794 and died in 1851. He was known for his watercolors and oil paintings, mainly landscapes. He was a pupil of Albert van Spiers in Amsterdam and Jacob van Hal in Antwerp. He became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in 1714. He was influenced by the work of the Italian Old Masters and Dutch and Flemish artists who had studied in Italy. He was a prolific and versatile painter who depicted a wide variety of landscape subjects, from Dutch countryside scenes to Scandinavian views featuring waterfalls. His only registered pupil was Meindert Hobbema. His work was in demand in the Dutch Republic during his lifetime and is now spread across private and institutional collections around the world. He shaped landscape painting traditions worldwide and influenced generations of Dutch landscape artists.
