Biography:

Jan Jansz. Westerbaen (I) was the son of the rope-maker Jan Jacobs Westerbaen, younger brother of the author Jacob Westerbaen; their sister Anneke married the painter Salomon de Bray in 1625. The artist was apprenticed to Evert Cuirijnsz. van der Maes in 1619 and became a member of the guild of St Luke in The Hague in 1624. He and his wife, Maria van der Maes, had five children. He was a prolific painter of portraits and still lifes, and was known for his mastery of light and shadow. He died in The Hague in 1686.
