Biography:
Jaspar Bongen the Younger was a German artist who was active in the late 1600s. He was known for his work in damascening, the technique of hammering gold and silver wires into grooves cut to receive them, which he used to enliven the hilt of this hunting sword. The technique added texture to the hilt, improving the user's grip and allowing for more control and accuracy while hunting. Hunting was a popular sport among the wealthy, and many nobles owned tracts of forest, but peasants were prohibited from hunting. Jaspar Bongen the Younger's work is highly regarded for its craftsmanship and attention to detail.
