Biography:

Jay Dearborn Edwards was an American photographer born in New Orleans in 1831 and died in 1900. He was among the earliest photographers to document the city of New Orleans. In the 1860s, he travelled extensively in the South, documenting the Civil War and its aftermath. He is known for his photographs of plantations, cities, and people of the South. He worked primarily in the wet collodion process, which was the most common photographic process of the time. His works have been exhibited and collected by major institutions, including the Getty Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the Historic New Orleans Collection.
