Biography:

Jean-Baptiste Joseph Debay, also known as Jean de Bay, was a French sculptor. He was born in Nantes, France in 1802 and died in Paris in 1862. Debay studied with his father, who was also a sculptor, and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1820. He won the Prix de Rome in 1829 and went on to become one of France's most significant sculptors of his day. Debay worked on several important buildings, including the Palais du Louvre and the churches of Madeleine and Saint-Eustache. He executed numerous commemorative statues, some of which are at the Musée de Versailles.
