She later honed her skills at the Royal Academy of Art from 1897 to 1901, where she studied with Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig.

Van Heemskerck's first foray into modern art was in Paris, under the guidance of Eugène Carrière. Her subsequent summers in Domburg introduced her to avant-garde luminaries like Piet Mondriaan and Jan Toorop, who offered her valuable advice.
