Biography:
Johannes Tavenraat was a Dutch painter, draftsman, engraver and lithographer. He mainly produced landscapes and hunting scenes and worked in the romantic tradition. Tavenraat was actually destined to trade in the business of his father, who was a cloth merchant, but he decided to become an artist. He was a pupil of the landscape painter Andreas Schelfhout. Tavenraat was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in Amsterdam and the Pulchri Studio in The Hague. He exhibited his works in the Netherlands and abroad, including in Paris, where he won a gold medal in 1849. Tavenraat's works are represented in many museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. He was also a teacher and had many students, including the famous painter Anton Mauve.
