Biography:

John Broadwood (1732–1812) was a British maker of harpsichords and pianos. He founded the piano manufacturer John Broadwood & Sons in 1728 with Burkat Shudi, but continued it after Shudi's death in 1773. Broadwood produced his first square piano in 1771 and worked to develop and refine the instrument. He was a skilled craftsman and innovator, moving the wrest plank of the earlier pianoforte to the back of the case in 1781.
