He was brought up from early childhood in Mexico and was an Anglo-Mexican artist. Golding's mother’s family (née ...) was from Mexico. He was an artist, teacher and historian of modern art, who wrote a seminal work on cubism. He was a British painter and art historian, probably best known as an eminent scholar of 20th century art. He is the only fellow to have had an international career in the humanities, with a double life centred on London, but always in touch with the Americas.
