Biography:

John Hewson (ca. 1745-1821) was a textile artist who trained in a cotton-printing factory in England. He emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1773 with the encouragement of Benjamin Franklin, and established a cotton-printing factory in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. Hewson produced the bedcover in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art between 1790 and 1810, and is considered a preeminent figure in American textile history. He also served during the Revolution and was captured near Burlington, New Jersey. Hewson was a prolific textile artist and is known for his contributions to the American textile industry.
