Biography:
Jon Cattapan is an Australian visual artist, born in 1956, best known for his abstract oil paintings of cityscapes and his service as the 63rd Australian war artist. He has also worked as a professor of visual art at the University of Melbourne in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at the Victorian College of the Arts.
Cattapan was born to Italian parents in Melbourne, Australia. His family emigrated from Castelfranco in the Veneto region of Italy after World War II. Cattapan's early education took place in the inner city suburb of Carlton, known as Melbourne's Little Italy, before moving to the suburb of Highett where he spent most of his childhood and young adult life.
Cattapan had his first group exhibition Crisis Drawings in 1978 with artist Peter Ellis at the RMIT faculty gallery. He went on to complete a Masters of Arts by research in 1992 at Monash University. In 2006, Cattapan was honored with a major retrospective The Drowned World: Jon Cattapan works and collaborations at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne.
In 2013, Cattapan received the prestigious Bulgari Art Award, presented at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He has also been awarded several residencies, including a residency as a visiting artist at Hongik University in Korea and a residency in Venice at the Venice printmaking studio.
Some notable works by Cattapan include Night Patrols (Around Maliana) - Left Panel, which is housed at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia. This painting showcases his ability to capture the essence of modern conflict and peacekeeping.
