Jules Pierre Van Biesbroeck was a Belgian Orientalist artist, born in Portici, Italy in 1873. He was the son of Jules Evarist van Biesbroeck, a painter from Ghent. At the age of 15, Van Biesbroeck made his debut at the Salon des Champs-Elysées in Paris with his monumental work The Launch of the Argo.

Early Life and Career

In 1895, Van Biesbroeck began to devote himself to sculpture and received various commissions. In 1897, he came second in the Belgian Prix de Rome for sculpture. When German troops invaded Belgium during World War I, he fled to Bordighera, Italy, where he continued to paint and sculpt. Van Biesbroeck lived in Algiers from 1926 to 1938, where he was influenced by the light and atmosphere of North Africa. He died in Ghent, Belgium in 1965.
