Biography:

Jules Turcas was born in Cuba in 1854 and died in New York City in 1917. He was a Tonalist landscape painter, genre, and animal artist. Turcas was part of the first wave of artists at the Old Lyme Art Colony. He was known for his paintings of toiling farmers and their animals. Turcas spent his summers in Old Lyme, Connecticut, from 1902 to 1917. He was born the son of a wealthy sugar plantation owner in Cuba, which may have influenced his interest in painting toiling farmers and their animals.
