Laurie Anderson is an American avant-garde artist, musician, and filmmaker whose work spans performance art, pop music, and multimedia projects. She was born on June 5, 1947, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and initially trained in violin and sculpting. Anderson achieved unexpected commercial success with her song 'O Superman' in 1981. She has since released numerous studio and live albums, starred in and directed the 1986 concert film Home of the Brave, and produced theatrical and documentary works, voice acting, and art installations. Anderson is a pioneer in electronic music and has invented several musical devices used in her performances. She is also known for her multimedia presentations and her roles as a composer, poet, and writer.
