Biography:

Manolo Millares was a Spanish painter. He was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in 1926 and died in Madrid, Spain, in 1972. Millares was a self-taught artist who was introduced to Surrealism in 1948. In 1953, he moved to Madrid and became an abstract painter. In 1957, Millares along with other artists founded the avant-garde group El Paso (The Step) in Madrid. The members of El Paso at the time of signing the manifesto and in their first exhibition were Antonio Saura, Rafael Canogar, Manolo Millares, José Ayllón, Luis Feito, Juan Antonio Aguirre, Martín Chirino, Manuel Rivera, Pablo Serrano, Antonio Suárez and Francisco Farreras. The 1957 Ateneo de Madrid exhibition of his jute canvases and his registration for the Venice Biennale the same year earned him international recognition. Millares is renowned for his spectacular collages created with jute, rope, sackcloth and other materials, which he attached to his paintings. His works are held in numerous public and private collections around the world.
