Jay DeFeo (Mary Joan DeFeo) was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, in 1929. She was an American artist known for her experimental works, particularly her monumental painting 'The Rose'. DeFeo became celebrated in the 1950s as part of the spirited community of Beat artists, musicians, and poets in San Francisco. She produced courageously experimental works throughout her career, exhibiting what art critic Kenneth Baker called 'fearlessness.' DeFeo died in 1989.
