Biography:

Mary Sibande is a South African artist born in Johannesburg in 1982. She is known for her sculptures, paintings, photography, and design. Sibande uses these mediums and techniques to help depict the human form and explore the construction of identity in a postcolonial South African context. Her art also attempts to critique stereotypical depictions of women, particularly black women. Sibande received a degree in Fine Arts at The University of Johannesburg in 2007 and has since participated in multiple artist residencies across Europe and the U.S.A. She has also traveled extensively and has had her work exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world.
