Place: Mankot
Biography:
The Master of the Court of Mankot, also known as Meju, was an Indian painter who worked at the court of Raja Mahipat Dev (r. 1660–90) of Mankot at the end of the seventeenth century. He is known for his deeply felt and astoundingly inventive pictures, often depicting Hindu deities and mythological scenes. His style is characterized by bright colors, flatness, and abstract form, with a distinct Indian predilection for universal themes rather than individual ones. Despite the influence of Mughal painting, Rajput painting, and to a lesser extent European and Deccan painting, the Master of the Court of Mankot never lost his own distinct identity. His work is highly prized and can be found in museums and private collections around the world.
