Biography:
Madge Gill, also known as Maud Ethel Eades, was an English outsider and visionary artist born in East Ham, Essex, England in 1882. She spent her early years in seclusion due to being an illegitimate child and was later sent to Canada as a British Home Child. After returning to England, she found work as a domestic servant and caregiver. Gill's work was heavily influenced by her experiences with Spiritualism and astrology, which she was introduced to by her aunt. She began creating her art after the death of her daughter and the loss of the use of her left eye. Gill's work is known for its intricate pen and ink drawings, often featuring female figures and abstract patterns. She continued to create art until her death in 1961, leaving behind a vast body of work that is considered to be among the most emblematic of Art Brut and mediumistic art.
