Biography:
The Meidias Painter was an ancient Greek Attic red-figure vase painter. He was a contemporary of the Eretria Painter and is considered one of the most interesting painters of his time. He is known for painting on unusual vase shapes, such as oinochoai, belly lekythoi, figure-shaped vases, and head-shaped kantharoi. His paintings often depict many figures, moving in groups across all available surfaces. He painted themes such as athletes, satyrs and maenads, and mythological scenes. He also painted white-ground vases. The Meidias Painter's drawing style was influenced by the Eretria Painter and he, in turn, influenced later artists. He is named after Meidias, an Athenian vase owner.
