Michael Ray Charles is an American painter born in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1967. He won the Rome Prize in 2018. Charles is currently a professor of art at the University of Texas, Austin. His work explores historic African American stereotypes and addresses issues of race and identity in American culture. Charles is known for his provocative and thought-provoking paintings that challenge viewers to confront their own biases and assumptions.
