Biography:

Ming Smith is an African-American photographer born in Detroit, Michigan in 1950. She was raised in Columbus, Ohio and attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she studied microbiology. After graduating in 1973, she moved to New York City and began her career as a photographer. She is known for her surreal and ethereal style, often using techniques such as in-camera techniques, darkroom techniques, collage techniques, and paint on prints. Smith's work is less engaged with documentation of events and more focused on expression of experience. She was the first African-American female photographer whose work was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Smith's early work was composed of photos that were shot quickly to produce elaborate and complex images. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
