Morgan Gwenwald is an American photographer and film director. She is known for her work in the LGBTQ+ community, particularly her photographs of lesbian culture and activism. Gwenwald was one of the first openly lesbian photographers to emerge during the early days of the gay rights movement. She was a contributor to On Our Backs, the first women-run erotica magazine and the first magazine to feature lesbian erotica for a lesbian audience in the United States. Gwenwald's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She has also directed and produced films, including the documentary 'In the Life' and the short film 'Stonewall Outloud'. Gwenwald has been an active member of the LGBTQ+ community and has been involved in various activist organizations and initiatives. She has also been a mentor and educator, teaching photography and filmmaking to young artists and activists. Gwenwald's work has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including the Humanist Feminist Award in 2017. She continues to create and inspire, using her art to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.
