Biography:

Otto Griebel was a German painter born in Meerane, Germany in 1895. He was most associated with New Objectivity and proletarian-revolutionary art. Griebel first completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in 1909 and later studied stained glass with Josef Goller at the Dresden School of Applied Arts. He became a soldier in the First World War and was seriously wounded. After the war, he became a member of the revolutionary workers' and soldiers' council in Dresden and joined the KPD. Griebel studied under Robert Sterl at the Dresden Academy and met Oskar Kokoschka. He was also a member of the Dresden Dada group and formed friendships with George Grosz and John Heartfield. Griebel was an important figure in the art of puppetry in Dresden. He died in Dresden in 1972.
