Biography:
Paul Tassaert was a French painter, illustrator, dessinateur, lithographer, graveur, producteur born in Paris in 1800 and died in Paris in 1874. He was part of a French family of artists of Flemish origin, son of Jean-Joseph-François Tassaert, who worked mainly in Paris, and grandson of Jean-Pierre-Antoine Tassaert, one of the leading portrait sculptors working in Berlin in the late 18th century. He learned engraving at an early age but from 1817 dedicated to painting. He painted historical and genre subjects and was a lithographer. He was the brother of Paul Tassaert, who was also a painter and printmaker. He was a pupil of Guillaume Guillon Lethière at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts.
