Biography:
Paul Victor Mathey was a French painter and engraver. He was born in Paris on November 14, 1844 and died in Paris on November 24, 1929. Mathey learned his art at the École des beaux-arts de Paris in the workshops of painters Léon Cogniet, Isidore Pils and Alexis-Joseph Mazerolle. He began to exhibit at the Salon de Paris in 1868 and became a recognized portrait painter. He has several times portrayed artists from his entourage in their studios. Mathey was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1889.
