Palmer C. Hayden, originally named Peyton Cole Hedgeman, was born on January 15, 1890, in Widewater, Virginia. He was an African American painter who came to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance. Hayden is known best for his seascapes and landscapes, as well as his depictions of African-American life. He sketched, painted in both oils and watercolors, and was a prolific artist of his era. Hayden died on February 18, 1973, in New York, New York.
