Biography:
Pierre Joseph Toussaint was born in Brussels in 1822. At the age of fourteen, he enrolled at the Academy of Brussels, where he was schooled in a traditionally Flemish manner. He remained there as a student and professor’s assistant until 1850, when he left to pursue a career as an independent artist. Toussaint’s work is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail and its exploration of the human condition. He was particularly interested in the relationship between the individual and society, and his paintings often depict scenes of everyday life that reflect the social and political issues of his time. Toussaint’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, and he is considered one of the most important artists of the nineteenth century. He died in Brussels in 1888.
