Biography:
The Karneia Painter was an important early Lucanian vase-painter who had some considerable influence on the later outstanding Palermo and Karneia Painters. He was active around 400 BCE and was a ceramographer protolucano, so named by Trendall. He painted the great volute crater from Ceglie a Taranto (4358). He is also known for his depiction of the Motya Youth, a statue dating to about 480–450 BCE, which has five holes on its head, the significance of which has been the subject of much debate. The Karneia Painter is also associated with the vintaging festival held in honour of Apollo Karneia, as depicted on a terracotta vase now in the British Museum.
