Biography:

Rafael Romero de Torres was a Spanish painter, born in Córdoba in 1865 and died in the same city in 1898. He was the son of the painter Rafael Romero Barros and the brother of Julio and Enrique, who also became painters. He showed a talent for art at an early age and was enrolled at the Escuela provincial de Bellas Artes. He received several scholarships, including one from the Diputación Provincial de Córdoba in 1884, which allowed him to enroll at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. There, he studied sculpture as well as painting. He won several prizes and spent three years in Rome, where he befriended other Spanish artists. In 1888, he returned to Spain and alternated his residence between Córdoba and Madrid. Much of his work involved socially conscious themes. He participated in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1890 and received a second-class medal, but it was later taken away and given to someone else. He died in 1898, possibly due to the disappointment and neglect of his work.
