R M Palaniappan, also known as Ramanathan Palaniappan, was born in Devakottai, Tamil Nadu, India in 1957. He is a renowned Indian artist who works in mixed media prints, embellishing his works with rubber stamps, wax seals, and collage materials. Palaniappan's artworks incorporate symbols and notations derived from scientific concepts, and he often incorporates the syntax of the sciences, such as diagrammatic notations and symbols, in his work. He studied Post Diploma in Industrial Design (ceramic) and a Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) at Government College of Arts Crafts, Chennai. Palaniappan has exhibited his works in various galleries and museums, including CIMA Gallery, Dhoomimal Gallery, and Beach Museum of Art.
