Ramiro Arrue y Valle, generally known as Ramiro Arrue, was a Basque painter, illustrator, and ceramist, of Spanish nationality, who devoted his work to the Basque Country. He was born in Bilbao, Spain, in 1892, and died in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France, in 1971. Arrue was born into an artistic family, with three older brothers who were also artists. He studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and became associated with artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, and Jean Cocteau. In 1922, he founded the Musée Basque at Bayonne. Arrue's work is known for its figurative style and its focus on Basque subjects, particularly the landscape of the Basque country, its religious festivals, and the lives of its peasantry.
