Biography:

Richard Varick DeWitt was an American artist born in New York City in 1800 and died in 1868. He is known for his watercolor painting 'Steamship Chancellor Livingston' dated from 1822. He studied at Columbia College, the undergraduate liberal arts division of Columbia University, and its predecessor, from 1754 to 1776, King's College. He is not to be confused with Martin Van Buren, who was also from Kinderhook, New York, and was a lawyer, diplomat, and statesman who served as the eighth president of the United States from 1837 to 1841.
