Biography:

Robert Havell Jr. (1803–1878), also known as Robert Havell the Younger, was an English engraver, etcher, and painter. He was born in Reading, Berkshire, England, and was the son of Robert Havell the Elder (1769–1832), who was also an engraver and publisher. Havell Jr. was a member of the Havell family of Reading, which included a number of notable engravers, etchers, and painters, as well as writers, publishers, educators, and musicians. He was among the foremost practitioners of aquatint and had a long association with Indian art and culture. Havell Jr. is best known for his work as the engraver and publisher of John James Audubon's The Birds of America, which he produced between 1827 and 1838. He also produced a number of his own works, including landscapes and portraits, and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. Havell Jr. died in London in 1878.
