Biography:

Roy Cleveland Nuse was an American painter born in Springfield, Ohio in 1885. He was a Pennsylvania Impressionist artist and a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1925 to 1954. Nuse lived and painted in Bucks County, Pennsylvania for almost 60 years, working in a plein-air, impressionist style. He painted landscapes, figures in the landscape, still lifes and portraits, primarily in oils but also in pastels. His six children were often the subjects of his paintings, depicted especially in rural, outdoor settings. Nuse was educated at the Art Academy of Cincinnati in Ohio, where he studied under Vincent Nowottny and Frank Duveneck. He later attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he won all the major student awards, including two Cresson Traveling Scholarships to study art in Europe. Nuse passed away in 1975.
