She was active in New England and New York State during the 1830s, often working in partnership with her husband, Samuel Addison Shute. Ruth Whittier Shute continued painting through the 1870s, creating notable artworks such as 'Miss Emeline Parker of Lowell, Massachusetts' in 1832 using oil on paper. She is recognized as a significant contributor to American folk art.
