Biography:

Samuel John Hood (1872-1953) was an Australian photographer born in Glenelg, Adelaide. He established his own portrait business at The Adelaide Photographic Co, 256 Pitt St, Sydney in 1899. Hood is known for his photographs of the shipping trade and waterfront workers, which he sold to the crew and shipping companies. He also worked with maritime artists to produce views of vessels under sail and used his photographs to paint ship portraits. Hood's work documents the majestic tall ships that once graced Sydney Harbour, families and crews of the booming shipping trade in the early 1900s, the glitz and glamour of the 1920s and 1930s and Australian troops marching off to war.
