Biography:
Samuel Lancaster Gerry was an American artist born in Boston in 1813. He was a self-taught painter who specialized in portraits and landscapes, particularly of the White Mountains and other locations in New England. Gerry was associated with the New England Art Union and the Boston Artists' Association, and in 1857, he co-founded the Boston Art Club. He exhibited his works in various public settings, including the 1841 exhibit of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association, an 1879 exhibit of contemporary art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the 1860 convention of the National Art Association in Washington, DC. Gerry's students included H. Frances Osborne, Samuel Green Wheeler Benjamin, Fannie Elliot Gifford, Charles Wesley Sanderson, and J. Frank Currier. He spent most of his professional life in Boston, except for three years abroad. Gerry passed away in 1891.
