Biography:

Samuel Worcester Rowse (January 29, 1822 – May 24, 1901) was an American illustrator, lithographer, and painter. He was most famous for his drawings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Rowse is also well known for his lithograph, The Resurrection of Henry Box Brown at Philadelphia. He was born in Bath, Maine on January 29, 1822. He worked in Boston, Massachusetts, due to the demand for his crayon (pastel) and charcoal portraits. He developed a reputation for his portraits of famous people, including Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. He died in Boston, Massachusetts on May 24, 1901.
