Biography:

Sir John Gilbert was an English Romantic painter and illustrator of literary classics, especially remembered for his woodcut illustrations for the works of Shakespeare (1858–60) and Scott. He taught himself to paint and had only formal instruction from George Lance. Skilled in several media, he gained the nickname "the Scott of painting" and was best known for the illustrations and wood-engravings he produced for the Illustrated London News. Gilbert illustrated works by William Shakespeare, Charles Lamb, and many other English poets.
