Biography:
Stephen Ellis was born in 1951 in High Point, N.C.. Except for a two-year period in Cologne, Germany, he has lived and worked in New York City since 1973. Ellis, a painter, has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Europe. His work is represented in many public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Ellis has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts grant. He has taught at several universities, including Yale University and the School of Visual Arts. Ellis is also a writer and has published several books and essays on art and culture. He is currently a professor at the City University of New York.
