Bayezid II (Greek: Βαγιαζίτης, Turkish: II. Bayezid, Ottoman Turkish: بايزيد ثانى, romanized: Bayezid-i sânî; 3 December 1447 – 26 May 1512) was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1481 to 1512. He was the son of Mehmed II and Gülbahar Hatun, and the father of Selim I. Bayezid II was born in Didymoteicho, Thrace, in 1447. He was the eldest of four sons of Mehmed II and Gülbahar Hatun. Bayezid II ascended to the throne in 1481, after his father's death. He was the longest-reigning sultan of the Ottoman Empire, ruling for 31 years. Bayezid II was a patron of the arts and sciences, and he built many mosques, madrasas, and other public buildings. He also expanded the Ottoman Empire's territories in Europe and the Middle East. Bayezid II died in 1512, and he was succeeded by his son Selim I.
