, an American artist of the Hudson River School, was born on May 22, 1820, in a log cabin near Springfield, Ohio. He began his artistic journey as a young man in Cincinnati, painting landscapes and portraits before traveling to Europe in 1849 to further his training. Whittredge studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, a major art school of the period, under the tutelage of Emanuel Leutze.
Whittredge's work is characterized by its emphasis on light and soft atmospheric effects, earning him a reputation as a leading member of the second generation of Hudson River School artists. His travels with fellow artists, including Albert Bierstadt and Sanford Robinson Gifford, influenced his style, which was marked by meticulous factual renderings of scenic landscapes.
