Biography:
Valentin Schertle was a German painter, lithographer, and draftsman. He was born on January 31, 1809, in Villingen, Germany, and died on February 24, 1885, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Schertle learned his craft in the Herderschen Kunstanstalt in Freiburg im Breisgau under the direction of the copper engraver Karl Barth. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from May 3, 1831. Schertle was known for his portraits and lithographs, including those of Napoleon and members of the German royal families. He also worked as a teacher and was a member of several art associations.
