Biography:
Walter Langhammer was born in 1905 in Graz, Austria. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the most famous of India’s schools of modern oil painting, the ‘Bombay Progressives.’ Langhammer set up an open house at his studio and became a mentor to young Indian artists who later became the leading figures of India’s Progressive Art movement. He exhibited regularly at the Bombay Art Society and ran a salon where many painters would come for discussions and exchange of ideas. Langhammer was also a teacher, critic and patron of the arts. He died in India.
