Biography:

Whiting Manufacturing Company was founded by William Dean Whiting in 1840. The company was originally called Tifft and Whiting, but was later renamed to Whiting Manufacturing Company in 1866. The company was known for its silver and jewelry products, and was considered one of the most prominent jewelry manufacturers in the United States. Whiting was trained by Draper and Tifft, a jewelry company co-founded by his uncle John Tifft. The company's manufacturing center was located in North Attleborough, Massachusetts, but was destroyed by a fire in 1875. After the fire, the company's manufacturing center was transferred to New York. Whiting Manufacturing Company merged with the Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1924. William Dean Whiting died on November 26, 1891, in North Attleborough, Massachusetts, at the age of 76. His son Frank M. Whiting was also a silversmith.
