Biography:

Willem Anthonie van Deventer was a Dutch painter, draftsman, watercolorist, etcher and lithographer. He was born in The Hague in 1824 and died in the same city in 1893. He received his first painting lessons from his uncle Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen. He attended the The Hague Academy from 1843 to 1846, where the marine painters Sam Verveer and Anthonie Waldorp taught at the time and where his interest in marine painting was awakened. He was a pupil of the marine painter Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen. He was a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague. He was a teacher at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He was a teacher of Johannes Bosboom and Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch. He was a painter of landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes and genre scenes. He was a representative of the Hague School.
