En esta imagen austera y inquietante, Isenbrant representa a Cristo en forma de homo de Écce, representado al pueblo de Jerusalén por Pilato, prefecto romano de la ciudad, antes de ser llevado a ser crucificado. Lleva una corona de espinas y en su torso expuesto lleva las heridas de su flagelo. Sin embargo, la multitud hostil está omitida. Visto de cerca, en media longitud y casi tamaño de vida, Cristo y su madre han sido aislados para la contemplación devocional. Se presentan directamente al espectador, que se convierte en juez de Cristo, así como en participante en el dolor de la Virgen.
